Update: installed a new battery, charged to full by 4 PM yesterday, was at 83% today at 9 AM with 1 h 42 minutes of screen time. YES!!!
My iphone 7 is discharging by about 50% overnight. The phone is almost exactly 3 years old. My previous iPhone 5 lasted 4 years before it was done. I keep the software updated and this is a recent occurrence over the last few weeks. I have adjusted the push settings so it doesn’t auto fetch data. I have also removed the weather app and that was burning a good percentage of of my battery.
Options:
1. Get a new phone, because this one is 3 years old, but it’s been great and I really like it.
2. Get a battery replacement, probably through Verizon or best by. Would probably get a new phone next year around this time as software starts to date out.

Verizon won’t help you on batteries - worked there, did them and screen repairs as a side gig. Order a replacement off eBay for a few $, it’ll come with the necessary tiny screw drivers and it’ll take you all of 10 mins if I remember the process correctly. Those ones are 2 screws in the bottom, 1 screw holding the battery connector down, carefully removing the glued down battery and replacing with the reverse process. YouTube has plenty of guides.

I found a local place that will do it for $75.

Oof. As little risk involved they’re making a huge profit since they likely bought a bunch of batteries in bulk too.
I still think you should give it a shot after watching a YouTube video.

I don’ t see why an iPhone with that kind of battery health would be draining that fast. So mething is definitely not right.
You can make a genius appointment but what they’ll probably do (and you can try this on your own first) is:
erase all content and settings
I’d do the first one and monitor for a day or two to see if it helps, and if it doesn’ t then try the second option but set up as a new device . (you won’t lose much if you have icloud sync on, you’ll just have to re-download apps) and try that for a couple days and see if it helps.

I remember the good old days when phones had clip-on backs and you could just pop a fresh $10 ebay battery in there in about ten seconds

That’s my thought as well. The draining over night doesn’t make any sense. Previously it would only use about 5-10% overnight at most. There is almost no difference between battery life being used or not used. My initial thought is there was background software running that is draining the battery. I’ve done my best to eliminate that possibi lity.

Yeah, those were the good old days. I had a moto razor, it would hold a charge for 4-5 days even with frequent use.

If those health stats are accurate, I’m not sure a battery will help you, seems like there could be other weirdness going on.

My feeling is weirdness. I wouldn’t expect the battery to discharge this rapidly all of a sudden for no reason.

I can’t be without my phone that long. We also don’t have an apple store locally to me.

Yeah, mine’s also a 3-year-old 7. I think I’m going to visit Batteries Plus on Friday and get a new battery. The phone itself is pretty much perfect, and I’m not gonna replace it any time soon.

My wife’s 6 does this exact same thing, and it is also at about 89% battery. If she doesn’t plug it in before bed, it’s dead in the morning. And we’ve turned off all the push etc. that we can think of. It might have something to do with her email checking her Exchange server at work, but I thought we’d turned that automatic business off too. I’ll be interested to see what you decide to do.

“I keep the software updated and this is a recent occurrence over the last few weeks”
There is your problem. Apple has been known to make the phone worse with software updates. Makes you buy a new phone. But anything beyond 2+ years is past end of life for any phone generally anyways. Battery replacement is one solution though if only it were an easy DIY job. I have found that taking phones apart that dont have “
user replaceable”
batteries never go back together quite right.
Your screen off time is wild though so it indicates you dont use it very much if thats your usual day. Im also confused how its discharging overnight, is that not when you charge it?

This is unfortunately common with older iPhones and many people swear it’s in the software to purposefully do it after so many years.
Keep your phone on low-power mode and charge it as much as possible. I’d spring for the battery replacement, myself.

When my phone is at 80% when I go to bed I don’t see any reason to charge it. So I usually charge it when I get to work in the morning. Correct I don’t use my phone that much day to day unless I’m traveling. I don’t want it to brick when I actually need it for my boarding passe s etc....

Bummer. I agree with others that there’s definitely some software issue that will hopefully resolve this.

If your phone is at 80% when you go to bed then its absolutely unused and battery health is fine. So you are saying with no use its ending up at 30% overnight? That seems odd and definitely indicative of particular apps being at fault. I would think the best solution is just turn it off overnight then and use a physical alarm clock or something instead. You could probably figure out what apps are at fault or if its errant data (try airplane mode for that) but turning it off is a surefire way to fix the problem if its not draining during the day.

Lithium batteries degrade over time. That has nothing to do with software.
The software thing that irks people is Apple slows down the phones’ processors as the battery degrades, to preserve battery life.

Get a new battery for her phone and pay someone to do it. It will be like new. There are tons of places that do batteries, just make sure it is an OEM battery not a $10 battery off of amazon.

Nice. My 8 shows 83% max capacity, and I’ve made a few changes to reduce daily power draw. We’ll see how long it lasts before I feel like I need a new battery or a new phone.

I’m like you - no reason to put something out of service when it’s still working perfectly well. Although the low-light performance of the new version’s cameras is very tempting...
